Are You Sending Mixed Messages?

In today’s world most of us are connected to each other in more than one way. In the past you had your business and you had people you knew that you considered “Business Acquaintances”.

But in truth unless you left your office, got in your car and drove to a business event of some kind you did not see these people. Unless of course you had some kind of a store front that they came into or the other way around.

But you personal thoughts and ideas were essentially only seen by “friends and family” and not the world at large.

Enter the new normal world of business…

In this world we are all “connected” in some way. Maybe one person in “friends” with your business partner who is friends with you on Facebook.

Or maybe I am connected with my mom on twitter who is following one of my customers who is also on Twitter.

But no matter how you twist it the world has gotten smaller and more public and in some way we are all connected to each other. In an effort to date myself I will mention “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon”. And say this is now the case for everyone.  :)

So this is kind of old news right? You know this right?

Okay so if you know this are you thinking about it when you post things on these social media sites? Do you consider who might share your thoughts or Re-Tweet your ideas to the world?

I think that there are people out there who occasionally forget this little fact of our “New Normal” lives.

Here is what I mean. I recently “connected” with someone online. I connected with them because they commented on something someone else had posted.

But here is where the disconnect happened. This person was talking about the new economy and how things sucked for them in their part of the world. They were talking about how they could not find a job and how hard things are for them.

They are certainly entitled to feel this way. We all have bad days, no matter how positive we might be. And sometimes we just want to vent.

But I put out there that maybe you should not do this online…

Especially if you are in the motivational world. Or the Life Coaching business. Or some other industry where you are being paid to help others with their issues.

Would you be confused if your Psychiatrist posted about how much better they felt after their nervous break down recovery stay at Bellview?

Your Psychiatrist is entitled to have just as many nervous breakdowns as they would like….but they may not want to talk about them online.

So if you are confused why people seem to be confused by your product line. Or if you promote and promote and promote but the sales just don’t come in. You might want to take a look back through some of your past postings on your various social media accounts.

Does your message match your industry? If you are in the health and wellness industry do you talk about what healthy recipe you made for dinner or the Hot Fudge Sundae with all the trimmings you had for dessert?

Are you putting out a consistent message? Have you seen examples of people or companies not being consistent in their messages? share them with us below so we can all learn from their mistakes…
