Personal Branding: What Makes You An Expert?
In today’s world you have to stand out from the crowd in any business you are in. It doesn’t matter if you are in a franchise, networking marketing, big business or a home business making and selling home made candles. It’s all the same.
You have to become known as the expert in your industry and in your area. You need to be the go-to guy or girl in everything related to your industry.
So what is it that makes you an expert?
So many people I know are in business but they don’t view themselves as the expert. My first question for them is…
“So you want me to buy your product but you aren’t an expert? That doesn’t put my mind at ease and make me want to buy from you!”
So how do you become an expert? Simply by letting people know you are one.
If you are in business, chances are you know 90% more than most of the people out there. Guess what, those 90% are willing to pay you to educate them and solve their issues as long as you are the expert.
They need to trust that you know what you are doing.
You need to share with them how you can help them. What your process is and how it will solve their problem.
That is how you become an expert.
Here’s a couple of easy ways that you can quickly and easily become the expert in your area:
Blog about tips and tricks in your business.
You can share tips, tricks, ideas and even reviews of products with people. They will love the help and ideas. The more you share this type of information, the more they will see you as a trusted source and you will become the expert in their eyes.
When someone asks you a question, do a blog post explaining the answer. Then share that answer with your list. You can bet that if one person had the question others do also.
This builds great credibility for you.
Speak Up
Do presentations for your local networking groups, chambers, etc. many times these groups need speakers to educate their members and you can do this to help share your information. This alone has become a huge piece of how I have grown my own business. I am always looking for new groups that want me to come in and educate their ranks.
It’s all about education. I give them a ton of free stuff in order to help them with their businesses and let them know I am the expert. Many become customers of mine. Those that don’t usually at least refer others to me because they got so much already.
If you don’t think you are a public speaker, you need to give it a try. Start with a smaller group. You might do a workshop that is limited to 10 people so you can get your feet wet. Do enough of them and 100 people won’t even phase you.
This is a great way to get your name out there and build your reputation.
Ask For Testimonials
Using testimonials is a great way for other people to see you as the expert. They aren’t likely to believe you by just your own promotion. You need others to help you spread the word. You need raving fans to help spread the word as well.
Follow these simple steps and it’s a great way to get started as an expert in your area. Don’t let fear set in and think you are just like everyone else. You need to create your own personal branding and build your reputation as the go-to person in your industry. Following these simple steps will help you become the expert and grow your business.

If you want to have people see and hear what you have to say… start with your personal presence. An expert is aware that first impressions do count.
How do you present yourself on and off line. First impressions really do make a difference. It starts from the moment someone logs in to your blog. If your blog is messy, or has large chunks of text… people are usually out of there before they can read what you have to say.
Off line… be your best. Grooming seems to be taking a back seat these days. However, we all seem to notice.

Great comments Kathryn!
You are very correct. many times it’s a little attention to detail that can make a world of difference.
