So not too long ago, I was having a conversation with someone that was interested in one of our courses. The conversation was great and he was really excited about the materials in the course.
As we were going through what was included and I was answering a few questions he had, he had looked up my Facebook profile and stopped cold in his tracks.
So Facebook is one of the most widely used social networking sites in the internet today. People of all ages and from all walks of life log in every day to see what their “friends” are up to.
I am an avid user of Facebook. (The term “Facebook Addict” has been used…). Since we teach marketing, I get asked (almost daily) questions about Facebook and how to use it.
One of the biggest questions I get asked is “Do I just set up a second account for my business?”
Are you a business owner? How about an entrepreneur? Or even a sales rep for a company? No matter what position you have in business, personal branding is a must if you want to stay ahead of the crowd.
Always remember this, you are a marketer first and foremost. Like it or not.
If there aren’t any sales, you aren’t in business at all.
Blogging. I think blogging is wonderful. I teach people how to blog. This post is going on a…blog.
But…I have blogged very little. You see most (95%) of the posts on this blog were created/written by my partner Ely. He writes them and I post them (and spread them all over the internet). That has been our system since the beginning.
Why is this? Because it just is (or rather it has been). It has nothing to do with my knowledge of the topic, marketing in this case. I have the knowledge. I teach during our live workshops. I give advise to our friends and business students. I just have not blogged.
So, as someone that is out and about quite a bit at networking events, one thing that still amazes me about most people at an event is that they don’t get what networking is about.
It’s about relationships, not a sales pitch.
If I want a sales pitch I’ll watch infomercials. At least they have better actors.
Now there isn’t anything wrong with telling people what you do if they ask. That’s expected. But, what amazes me is when I ask someone what they do and they go on for 20 minutes on how great their product is and how I should jump on board with them and that I’m insane for not already “taking advantage of this great opportunity”.
I actually had someone do that not that long ago. She was part of a network marketing company. First, let me say that I have no problems with network marketing. There are some awesome companies out there. But… She was trying to recruit me to be a rep for the company. She kept going on about how great the compensation plan was and how much money I could make.
In this episode of “Driving Your Marketing” Ely is trying to find out if you are passionate about your product. Do you understand why it is important to be passionate about the products or services you represent?
