Online Marketing Basics: It’s Called The World Wide Web For A Reason
Do you have a website for your business already? If not you really do need to have one. Nowadays, people aren’t asking you to fax them information or mail them your brochure. They want to see your website. This is pretty much critical in today’s world.
But, most people just build a basic website and expect to get a ton of people rushing to get to their website. Your website marketing is just like anything else you do for your business. You have to get it out there. Building a website and not driving traffic to it is like printing up 5000 brochures and leaving them in a closet. Both are pretty much useless.
It’s called the World Wide Web for a reason.
You need to create a web of pages that all drive traffic back to your main website, or to a specific page on that site.
There are hundreds of ways to do this. Your goal should be to keep adding in new streams of new traffic coming in all the time. It’s not a set it and forget it process.
Here’s a couple of things to get you on your way with this.
Submit your sites to the big search engines
Just putting the site up alone isn’t going to do much for you. You need to let the major engines know its there. They all have their own ways of doing this so we will use Google as an example. Just go to Google and search for “Google webmaster tool” They give you a ton of free help and tutorials to make your site better for their search engines. Including how to submit a site map to them for indexing.
This is just the tip of the iceberg but it’s a start. Start there and be sure to update your site regularly. This will help Google find you easier and they will index your site faster.
Start a Blog
Search engines feed off of fresh content. The more content, the more they like you. So the more you can post to your blog, the more search engine robots will come back looking for more to eat.
If your blog is on a separate site than your main website, then be sure to have a nice big button on your blog that will point them to your main website. It’s not a hard thing to do but I can’t believe how many people miss this one.
Organization Directories
Are you part of a Chamber of Commerce or other organization like a trade association? You need to make sure that your website is linked there as well. This will get you more exposure because of the people searching that directory and if that site ranks good in Google, you are likely to get a bump up from Google as well because of it.
Too many people believe what we call the “Field Of Dreams” myth… If I build it they will come. Well, it doesn’t quite work that way. With some online marketing basics under your belt you can get a ton more traffic to your site and make it an effective marketing tool for your business.
