3 Mistakes That Most Businesses Make With Email Marketing
Email marketing is a great way for any business to keep in contact with customers and prospects without spending a lot of money. The only drawback to using email marketing in your business is that a lot of people get a ton of spam email each and every day.
More and more, I keep seeing businesses going about email marketing the wrong way and in reality it actually hurts their reputation and sales for their business.
Here’s 3 mistakes that I see all the time and how you can avoid them and keep your readers happy to be on your list and looking forward to each and every one of your emails.
Sending nothing more than “Buy My Stuff” emails
I get a ton of email offers, specials and discounts every day in my inbox. As someone that gets between 100 and 200 emails each day, I only have time to look at the most relevant ones. If I’m looking to buy a product that that company sells right then and there, I’ll look at it. Otherwise, I just delete it.
Though this does help with hot prospects, it doesn’t do much to build a relationship with them. I don’t feel that they are building any connection with me other than just telling me that they want me to buy their stuff. What would happen if someone else comes along and educates me on how to use their products better? Or they share with me other information that I can use that might not be related to their business but IS related to my interests? I’d start to feel more inclined to buy form them.
You see, they took the time to share, not just pitch.
Not emailing enough
Once every few months when you think about it, isn’t enough.
I’ve actually had people email me about some new great product they have and I thought it was spam because I didn’t remember who they were. I’ve even had emails like that come from people I’ve actually met. The problem is that we meet new people every day. We buy from new companies every month. It’s hard to remember everyone… Unless they stand out and build a relationship with us.
You loose 10% of your buying influence with a customer or prospect each and every month that they don’t hear form you. It’s all about top of mind awareness. You need to make sure that your customers and prospects always remember who you are and what you do.
Once a month is the minimum you should be contacting your customers and prospects. Just be just that you are sending them good information and education so they see the importance of your emails.
Adding EVERYONE to their list
Just because you met someone at a chamber mixer or a seminar doesn’t give you permission to add them to your mailing list. People generally don’t mind if you send them and Nice To Meet You email but they don’t necessarily want to be added to your list. It’s nothing personal. They might not be in need of your products or services. They might already be perfectly happy with someone that they already buy from. They may just not want to get more email.
It doesn’t matter the reason, but you should never just add someone to your mailing list just because you can. It’s a sure way to tarnish your reputation and get reported for spamming.
Just send them a single email telling them it was great to meet them and add a link where they can download a free report or other educational piece you have to offer. This then makes them take action and gives you permission to add them to your list.
Just keeping these mistakes in mind when you are using email marketing in your business will make a huge impact on your email marketing for your business. You’ll have a cleaner list. You’ll get customers and prospects that will expect to see your emails and most importantly, you’ll build a loyal following of fans that WANT to read your emails.
